Neal Roese is an expert on judgment and decision-making. His research, currently supported by grants from the National Institute of Mental Health and the National Science Foundation, targets the intersection of reasoning, emotion, and mental health. Current projects include biases in causal judgment (e.g., blame and responsibility), hindsight bias, self-inference, and counterfactual thinking. Dr. Roese is an Associate of the Center for Advanced Study at the University of Illinois, and is a Fellow of Association for Psychological Science. With James Olson, Dr. Roese co-edited the 1995 book What Might Have Been: The Social Psychology of Counterfactual Thinking. His 2005 book If Only is about the psychology of regret and counterfactual thinking, and has appeared in German, Japanese, and Korean translations. Professor Roese also works occasionally as a consultant in questionnaire design and legal issues.
