The following information applies to all sections of Psych 100 EXCEPT Section X.
1. CREDITS/POINTS
a. Each completed study hour is worth 1 credit. If you complete 6 hours of studies you will receive 6
credits which is converted to 20 points. If you do NOT complete 6 hours of studies, you will receive 3
points for every credit earned. (NOTE that completing all 6 hours gives you two bonus points.)
b. You may review your record of studies at any time during the semester (if your record hasn't been
locked) by going to the web site and following the instructions. Researchers are required to record
attendance (or penalty) within 48 hours after the conclusion of the study. If attendance has not been
recorded within this time frame, you should contact the Subject Pool Administrator.

2. REGISTRATION: REGISTRATION DEADLINE IS Monday,
September 15,
2008, at 5
pm Registration is completed via the web. You can access the Subject Pool site at
http://subjectpool.psych.uiuc.edu.
To register, you must click on "New participant?" (found on the
lower left side of the page) and follow the
instructions provided for registering. Enter your name and student netid@uiuc.edu (you MUST
use your netid and your U of I email address--alternative email addresses will NOT be accepted).
You must also enter your quiz code, the three digit number you were given in your section of Psychology
100. Almost immediately, but certainly within 24 hours after you have registered, your logon and
password will be sent to the email address you entered. If your account is deleted for any reason, you
will need to register again. PLEASE NOTE THAT YOU MUST USE THE PASSWORD THAT IS SENT TO YOU WHEN YOU
REGISTER. USING THIS PASSWORD, YOU MAY LOGON AND CHANGE YOUR PASSWORD IF YOU LIKE. HOWEVER, IN ORDER TO
ACCESS THE SUBJECT POOL WEB SITE THE FIRST TIME AFTER REGISTRATION, YOU WILL NEED TO USE THE PASSWORD
YOU WERE SENT.

b. Contact the subject pool administrator
(subpool@psych.uiuc.edu)
if you have problems registering. If you do not register, you will not be eligible to sign up to
participate in studies and your subject pool points will be forfeited.
c. A common error during registration is entering an incorrect university email address (the program
requires the same address to be entered twice during the registration process) so be VERY CAREFUL when
entering your university email address.
d. Part of the registration process is completing a pretest. DO NOT neglect to do this immediately after
receiving your logon and password: the pretest must be completed in order for you to sign up for studies.
The first time you logon with your password, a screen will appear that says "Pretest Introduction." This
introduction will give you the guidelines for completing the pretest online. It should only take you 5 or
10 minutes to complete. Please note that ALL questions require an answer even if that answer is "None of
the above."
Once you have completed the pretest, click on "Save Changes." A "Final Review" screen will appear allowing
you to review your answers. If you need to change an answer, please do so now, as you will not have an
opportunity to change them later. Once you are certain of all of your answers to the pretest questions,
click on "Save Pretest." No answers may be changed after this.
IMPORTANT: All answers to the pretest questions remain confidential; only the Subject Pool Administrator
has access to the pretest answers.
3. REGISTRATION vs. SIGNING UP FOR STUDIES
a. REGISTRATION is the process of becoming a member of the subject pool, having an account, and being
able to sign up for studies in order to earn subject pool credits.
b. SIGNING UP FOR STUDIES occurs AFTER you have an account. You may sign up for and complete studies
throughout the semester as long as you complete the studies by the deadline,
which is Wednesday, December 10, 2008.
It takes some time before researchers have studies ready to post. DO NOT panic if there are no studies
posted for the first few weeks of the semester. Just keep checking the web site.
NOTE: Studies end during the final week of classes for the term; they do NOT extend into finals week.
Studies are posted throughout the semester as researchers are ready to run them. There is no specific
schedule for when studies are posted, which is why you need to check frequently for times and dates that
are available. Dates and times fill up quickly, so you must check often.
c. Once you have an established account, when you logon you will see a screen that has several options:
"Study Sign-Up"; "My Schedule and Credits"; and "My Profile." By clicking on "Study Sign-Up" you will see
all of the studies that you are eligible to participate in. You can also click on Studies from the top
toolbar and a list will be provided. Next to each study in the list, it will indicate whether it currently
has any open timeslots available to sign up for. It will also say how long that study lasts. You can track
your credits by clicking on "My Schedule and Credits." After you have received your password and activated
your account, you may change your password by logging on to your account and clicking on "My Profile" and
following the procedures outlined.
d. If you change sections in Psychology 100, be sure to send an email to the Subject Pool Administrator,
subpool@psych.uiuc.edu, telling her
which section you have transferred into.
4. STUDIES -- GENERAL GUIDELINES
a. Each study is scheduled for 50 minutes, the same as a class period.
b. For a 2 hour study you will receive 2 credits, and for a 3 hour study you will receive 3 credits.
The length of the study is listed along with the study sign up information. Three hours is the maximum
length for any one study.
c. Credit is given ONLY when you complete the study that you have signed up to attend. You will NOT
receive credit for attending a study for which you did not sign up, nor for any study that you didn't
attend or complete. If you sign up for a multiple session experiment, you must complete all parts before
you receive credit.
d. You MUST arrive on time for the study. If you are late to a study the researcher does not have to
allow you to participate and a penalty will be recorded for you for that study.
e. Do NOT be concerned if the researcher is not in the room when you arrive, especially if you arrive
early. Please wait 15 minutes past the scheduled start time for the researcher. If the researcher does
not arrive by 15 minutes past the designated start time contact the Subject Pool Administrator.
f. Do NOT use cell phones or pagers during a study. Prior to entering the study location, turn phones
and pagers off.
g. It is YOUR responsibility to schedule the 6 hours of studies that you
need to complete during the semester and to do so by the deadline.
5. STUDIES -- SIGNING UP
a. You sign up for studies by going to the web page, clicking on "sign up" for a list of studies and
following the directions provided. Study dates, times, locations and requirements will be shown for each
study that is available for scheduling. You can also click on "Studies" from the top toolbar.
REMINDER: Not all studies are held in the Psychology Building; therefore, you must pay attention to the
location when you sign up for a study.
b. A reminder is sent to you the night before your scheduled study via the email address you provided.
However, you are responsible for attending any study that you signed up for even if you do not receive a
reminder email.
c. If you cannot remember your password, go to the Web Site and click on "Lost Password." You will be
able to retrieve your password by following the steps outlined there.
6. STUDIES -- CANCELLING
a. If you are unable to attend a study that you signed up for you MUST CANCEL VIA THE WEB SITE 24 hours
in advance of the study date/time. To do this, click on the "My Schedule/Credits" option from the top
toolbar. You will see a list of all studies you have signed up for, as well as those you have completed.
Studies you have signed up for that you are allowed to cancel will have a Cancel button next to them.
Once you click Cancel, you will see a confirmation page. BE SURE TO PRINT AND KEEP THIS PAGE. Contacting
the Subject Pool Administrator or sending an email message to the researcher is NOT considered a
cancellation.
b. If you DO NOT cancel via the web site 24 hours in advance, then a penalty will be recorded in your
record. If 2 penalties are recorded, your record will be locked and you will not be allowed to sign up
for any additional studies. You may complete the studies for which you are already signed up. However,
since your record is locked you will not be able to see the list of these studies. Thus, you will need
to keep a list of your studies elsewhere in case you cannot look at your record. You will receive a
message from the Subject Pool Administrator notifying you that your record has been locked.
7. STUDIES -- SPECIAL TYPES
a. When signing up for a study, be sure to read any specific requirements: ethnicity, sex, gender,
corrected or non-corrected vision, right or left hand requirements, year in school. DO NOT sign up for
any study for which you are not qualified, if you do so, you will NOT receive credit for the study.
b. If you sign up for a multiple session study it is your responsibility to attend all of the sessions
or cancel your participation in the entire study. Attending only part of the study is unacceptable. You
will only receive credit when you complete all parts of the study.
c. On-line studies require the same sign-up procedure as other studies. YOU MUST COMPLETE THE ENTIRE
ON-LINE STUDY IN ONE SITTING. Be sure you have enough time (50 minutes) to complete the study before
you begin. If you DO NOT complete the study, it will be recorded as a penalty.
d. Please understand that you are ONLY required to participate in each experiment for 50 minutes (or
the equivalent for 2 and 3 hour experiments). You are NOT required to do anything outside of that 50
minute period. On occasion an experimenter might e-mail you before the experiment and ask you to bring
information (e-mail addresses of friends or family) to the experiment. YOU ARE NOT REQUIRED TO DO THIS.
This is entirely OPTIONAL. You may attend the experiment, participate, and NOT provide this information
and you will still receive full credit.
8. PENALTY
A penalty is recorded for any study that you sign up for, but do not attend or cancel at least 24 hours
in advance. You will also receive a penalty if you arrive late to a study or do not complete an on-line
study once you have begun it. When reviewing your record of studies do not become alarmed should
penalties appear as negative credits (this is a peculiarity of the software). Be assured that once
credits are awarded they are not removed UNLESS a mistake was made in recording the credit. At the end
of the semester the final points will be figured using the number of credits you earned during the
semester. A penalty does NOT remove a credit earned; it just does not add a credit to your balance. Two
penalties do, however, mean that your account is locked and you cannot sign up for additional studies or
look at your record.
9. QUESTIONS
You may direct questions concerning Subject Pool guidelines to the Subject Pool Administrator
(subpool@psych.uiuc.edu).
