The following information applies to all sections of Psych 100 EXCEPT Section X.
Evaluation of Course Work
There are 400 possible points in Psych 100. The following system will be used to determine your grade:
| |
Course component |
Points |
| a. |
Midterm
Exam (90 items) |
90 |
| b. |
Final Exam (130 items) |
130 |
| c. |
Subject pool participation |

| d. |
Evaluation by Section Instructor |

Total possible points |
400 |
Details about each of these five grading categories are provided below.
a. The Midterm
Exam covers the following topics: Introductory Concepts, Research Methods,
Human Development, Biological Psychology,
Learning, Memory, Cognition and Language, and Health, Stress and Coping (See
"Course Guide").
Midterm Exam Date: Monday, October 6, 7 - 9 PM.
b. The Final Exam covers the following topics: Cognitive Abilities,
Sensation, Perception, Consciousness, Motivation and Emotion,
Personality, Psychological
Disorders, Treatment, Social Cognition and Social Influence. (See "Course Guide").
Final Exam Date:
Monday, December 15, 8-11 AM.
c. Evaluation by Section Instructor: Your Section Instructor will assign
quizzes, writing assignments, and/or other
participation exercises and
assignments. Your Section Instructor will discuss with you the procedure to be
used for grading these (See "Course Guide").
d.
Participation in psychological investigations outside of class (Subject Pool):
(See "Course Guide").
Computing Your Grade
Your grade for the course will be calculated as follows:
| 1. |
Each
instructor adds the total number
of points earned by each student in his/her sections at the end of the
semester. (See your individual course section syllabus for more
details as your instructor may drop some of the lowest quiz and/or
assignment scores.) |
| 2. |
Each
instructor rank orders all of his/her students’ scores based on the
total number of points earned, from the most points to least
points. In other words, a frequency distribution of total points is
computed for all students in each Section Instructor’s classes.
FOR EXAMPLE:
Hypothetically 100 students in Instructor Y’s course earned the following total
points:

| 3. |
The top 10% of
total scores is determined. In the above example the top 10% of 100
students would be 10—e.g. total scores ranked from 1-10. (NOTE: If
the instructor had 200 students, the top 10% would be the top 20
total scores.) |
| 4. |
The mean of the top 10% is
calculated: In the above example this would be:
MEAN=
390+384+384+376+374+372+370+365+362=362= 3739/10= 373.9 =373
(Note that rounding is
always in favor of the students.) |
| 5. |
Grades for the course are then assigned as follows:
|
|
A+ =
100% of the MEAN of the upper 10%
Lower limit for A = 97% of the MEAN of the upper 10%
Lower limit for A- = 95% of the MEAN of the upper 10%
Lower limit for B+ = 92% of the MEAN of the upper 10%
Lower limit for B = 88% of the MEAN of the upper 10%
Lower limit for B- = 85% of the MEAN of the upper 10%
Lower limit for C+ = 82% of the MEAN of the upper 10%
Lower limit for C = 78% of the MEAN of the upper 10%
Lower limit for C- = 75% of the MEAN of the upper 10%
Lower limit for D+ = 72% of the MEAN of the upper 10%
Lower limit for D = 68% of the MEAN of the upper 10%
Lower limit for D- = 65% of the MEAN of the upper 10%
|
| |
In our example
an A+ required 373-400 points. (373 x 1.0 = 373); while a D-
required 242-253 points. (373 x .68 = 253. 68 rounded to 253 and
373 x .65 = 242.45 rounded to 242)
THIS IS JUST
AN EXAMPLE. ACTUAL POINT CUT-OFFS WILL DIFFER FOR INDIVIDUAL
INSTRUCTORS. |
