The Language Acquisition Lab
in the Psychology Department has openings for undergraduate research assistants in the Fall, Spring, & Summer semesters.
Students starting in the lab for the first time sign up for 3 credit hours and spend about 9 hours a week in the lab.  Students work in teams of 2, supervised by a graduate student or advanced undergraduate research assistant.  If you are interested, please go to our web site to fill out an application form.

Research in the lab explores how 1- to 3-year-olds identify spoken words, learn the meanings of words, and comprehend sentences.

Students can learn about and participate in many aspects of research in language acquisition, including any of the following:
  • helping to design materials for experiments
  • testing toddlers, preschoolers, and adults in experiments
  • phonetic transcription and coding of children's speech
  • coding visual fixations from videotapes

  • acoustic analyses of adults' speech

We need reliable, energetic students, with an interest in language and speech. Previous experience with children, and prior coursework in cognitive psychology, speech & hearing, or linguistics, are very helpful.  Faculty Supervisor: Cynthia Fisher <cfisher@s.psych.uiuc.edu>.
