The Psychology Major

Know Your Major
In order to graduate with a Psychology major, the following requirements must be met:
Grades & Numbers
- Maintain a 2.0 gpa in your UIUC PSYC courses (An average of C in your courses, not a C in every course)
- Earn at least 32 PSYC hours(From courses with the abbreviation/rubric PSYC)
Coursework
- Introductory Psychology PSYC 100, PSYC 103, PSYC 105 or equivalent transfer class
(For transfer courses, consult with the Course Applicability System CAS (First, click on Go Directly to Illinois CAS and then click on Guest login on the left of the page)
- Statistics - PSYC 235 or PSYC 301 (this course is recommended for students interested in pursuing Ph.D. work in Psychology)
If you are wanting a basic understanding of statistics may choose from STAT 100, ECON 202, EPSY 280, or other departmental introductory statistics.
**A non-PSYC statistics course will fulfill the statistics requirement but the hours will not count toward your 32 PSYC hours**
- 200-Level Psychology courses
Group III Biological/Cognitive Psychology Courses
Students must complete at least two from the following courses:
Group IV Additional Psychology Courses
Students must complete at least two from the following courses:
- Advanced Level courses
Advanced hours = any course numbered in the 300 or 400 level
Our college, Liberal Arts and Sciences (LAS) requires at least 21 hours of advanced credit
Of the 21 total hours, your major requires at least 12 hours of advanced PSYC courses
One advanced course must be a Psychology research methods/laboratory course. Choose one from the following:
Supporting Coursework 12 hours of non-Psychology courses
Ask yourself What classes would I take when no one is telling me what to take?
- From different departments: business-related, education, sciences
..
- From the same department: Sociology, Gender and Womens studies, African-American Studies, Chemistry
...
- Supporting course work could be
* a declared minor
* a second major
* pre-law interest
* pre-med courses
* specific graduate school preparation
